Alan began attending Franklin High School after his family moved to Los Angeles. Before moving to Los Angeles, he began acting lessons at the age of ten. From 1951 to 1953, he studied theatre at Los Angeles City College, graduating. He then attended at Bennington College in Vermont, where he graduated in 1954.
