Dick Advocaat began his career with the Dutch football club named ADO Den Haag in the year 1966. He played as a midfielder defensive there and made his first appearance in 1967 against GVAV. Overall he made 147 appearances and made 7 goals for the team.

The same year, Advocaat was transferred to San Francisco Gales. He made 29 appearances and scored his first goal for the team in the 1969-1070 season. After playing some seasons with the club, he signed a four-year deal with Roda JC in the year 1973. He made 113 appearances and 2 goals with the club by the end of his contract.

On July 1, 1977, he joined VVV-Venlo. He made 6 goals and 74 appearances for the team. Then in 1978, he went to the United States in order to play for Chicago Sting for North American Soccer League (NASL). He finished 32 appearances and 3 goals for the team. He then played for the club Den Haag and scored 1 goal in 11 appearances. In the year 1980, Dick joined Chicago Sting. He scored 1 goal in 31 appearances for the team.

After leaving the Chicago Sting, Advocaat joined the Sparta Rotterdam and played for the 1980-81 season. Advocaat has served as the manager for numerous teams like Russia, Belgium, South Korea, Netherlands, U.A.E, Serbia and many more. He also served as an assistant manager for the Netherlands national team in the year 1984.

After retiring from his playing career, Advocaat started his managerial career with DSVP. He served the team for four years. Then he moved to HFC Haarlem in 1987 where he served for two years. After that, Advocaat joined Schiedamse Voetbal Vereniging in the year 1989. He served the team as their manager and under his guidance, the team won the Eerste Divisie champions (1989-90) season and Eredivisie (1990-1991).

The same year, he joined the Dordrecht. In 1994, he was transferred to PSV and the team had its first match against Ajax on January 1, 1995. During that time, he also coached some re-known players Luc Nilis and Ronaldo. He even managed his team to qualified for the UEFA Champions League and they were also honored with the Eredivisie title.

So far, Advocaat has managed numerous clubs like Borussia Monchengladbach and Rangers. He won the SPL League Cup and Scottish Cup for the Rangers. He also served the Zenit Saint Petersburg where the team won the 2008 UEFA Cup Final. Other than that, he has served the club of AZ, Sunderland A.F.C, Fenerbahce and many more.
