Petter Solberg is a former professional rally driver from Norway. He became the first Norwegian rally driver to have ever win the World Rally Championships in 2003.
Petter Solberg is one of the greatest rallycross racers from Norway. Throughout his career, he has been part of numerous teams including Ford Factory, Subaru, Petter Solberg World Rally Team, Volkswagen.
Petter made his professional debut as a rallycross driver in 1998 with the World Rally Championship. Following the next year in 1999, he joined the Ford factory team. He then joined the Subaru World Rally Team.
In the year 2000, Petter left Ford and went on to join the Subaru World Rally Team (SWRT). Later in 2002, Petter won his first-ever WRC in Wales (Wales Rally GB). Followed by winning another race at the Wales Rally GB in 2003. It was his second in Wales at the World Rally Championship. He is the first Norwegian rally driver to have ever won this title.
From 2005 – 2010
In the season 2005, Petter led his team winning two events out of the first three events held in Sweden and Mexico. Next year, he continued with his previous team Subaru team with a new version of the Impreza WRC. He was sponsored by 24SevenOffice.
Later in the 2007 season, Petter started the season finishing sixth place on the Rally Monte Carlo. During that time, he went on to participated in the 2007 Race of Champions representing his national team Norwegian alongside his brother, Henning. Solberg. In the next season, Solberg finished in the fifth position in Monte Carlo and later achieved fourth in Sweden. Overall he finished the season with 4th position in two events and later finished 5th in the 2009 Drivers’ Championship.
On 12 January 2010, he competed in the 2010 World Rally Championship and bought two Citroën C4 WRC (2009-spec) cars from Citroen. He also participated in the Swedish Rally Solberg where he completed the race in 9th place with 2 points. At the Corona Mexico Rally, he finished the second round of the season in the third position next to Loeb.
In the year 2011, Petter competed in the World Rally Championship with his car Citroen DS3 WRC. In the month of February that year, his driving license was suspended in Sweden. Because the police found him driving above the speed level on his way to the fifth stage of the country’s WRC round. He was driving at the speed level of 32 km/h and the police forced his co-driver, Chris Patterson, to take up the wheel of the car.
The same year in December, Ford made an announcement that Solberg he will be returning to the factory team of Ford in 2012. He secured the third position in the Monte-Carlo competition. He then completed the next round in 4th place next to Mikko Hirvonen which was held in Portugal.
Later he was given third place where he scored 4 points. And on December 4, 2012, Solberg announced that he will not be competing in the WRC 2013 season.
ERX and WRX Career
In the year 2013, Petter participated in the FIA European Rallycross Championship (ERX) in Torsby. He finished the season 8th overall in the Supercars category. In the next year, he went on to participate in the FIA World Rallycross Champion (WRX) driving his PSRX Citroen DS3 Supercar. Later in 2015, he along with Liam Doran went on to compete for the Solberg Doran Rallycross team. And he won his WRX championship title at the Rosario in Argentina.
In 2016, Petter went for the FIA World Rallycross Championship with his Supercars class Citroen DS3 which was held in Portugal. He won the first round and getting three further podiums with a total of eight top 5 finishes, and completing the race in 4th place. Recently, in December 2018, Petter with a VW Polo R participated in the AWD class at the GRiD 2018 gymkhana rallycross in Johannesburg where he finished the race in second place.
