In the year 2013, he was charged under 21 corruption charges. The charges include wire fraud, conspiracy, bribery and as well as money laundering and filing false tax returns. He also charged for taking a bribe of more than $500,000 in payouts from a businessman in exchange for city contracts.
Ray is the first mayor ever to be charged criminally for corruption in office. On February 12, 2014, Nagin was convicted on 20 of the 21 counts by the jury and was sentenced 10 years in prison.
